Razer Blade: The World's First "Real" Gaming Laptop

E-mail Print PDF

Some say the days of PC gaming are over. Some evidence is undeniable: publishers are moving away from the PC in favor of consoles. DRM controversies seem to arise every other week, turning the PC gaming scene into a virtual police state. Hardware giant HP has just announced their intention to separate their PC branch entirely. Admittedly, it looks bleak.

Thankfully, Razer, the international gaming peripheral colossus, doesn't seem to have gotten the memo. Razer has just announced its biggest product yet: the Blade. CEO Min-Liang Tan bills it as the first “true” gaming laptop (rather than desktop replacement), and, on paper, it looks to be one of the most well-rounded laptops today.

Hewlett-Packard is making news this morning after multiple sources are reporting that the company is planning to spin off its personal computer business and purchase British software firm Autonomy for $10 billion.  The announcement has not be made official yet, but sources close to HP are saying the a press release from the company could be released as early as later this afternoon.  These business moves will position HP to once again climb to the forefront of cutting-edge computing trends, as the company has been lagging behind competitors like Apple.

Microsoft: No IE10 for Vista, XP holdouts.

For those of you who haven't yet updated from Windows Vista to Windows 7 (and, to be honest, there is no reason not to have done so by now), Microsoft has announced that the newest version of Internet Explorer won't be compatible with any versions of Windows prior to 7. Of course, those still using Windows XP--mainly businesses now--will be similarly left out. This announcement comes barely a month after the final IE9 release and clearly shows that Microsoft is finally getting serious about the current "browser wars," after years of being associated with what was by far the worst web browser on the market.

This isn't the first time Microsoft has limited browser support to its newer operating systems. The recently-released IE9 required graphics and text API's Direct2D and DirectWrite to run, neither of which were present in XP. However, there are no major differences, says Ars Technica, preventing IE10-Vista compatibility, and that this decision was motivated by the desire to shift market share away from the older versions of Windows.

Criminals Use Facebook Too

Once more, people fail to realize the consequences of freely putting information about themselves on the internet.  A group of thieves recently were caught robbing homes based on victim's Facebook updates.  When users would post that they were away, the buglers would strike.  Read more about it here.

ATi to go by the wayside

E-mail Print PDF

We all knew it would come sooner or later.  After AMD's acquisition of the ATi brand, it was inevitable.  The lone brand of the classic GPU era is nVidia.  Gone are the days of 3dfx, S3, Trident, Creative, ATi, and more.  AMD will take over branding for the ATi Radeon series of cards.  Of course, the products will still be designed by the same team.  The cards will just be named differently.

This branding change make sense for the AMD Fusion line.  Just as Intel has its own integrated graphics division, their Centrino requires Intel CPUs and GPUs to be paired.  It's just a little sad to see a brand of 25 years swallowed up and only remnants trickling out.  Anyone remember the 3D Rage?  The All-in-Wonder?  All relics of the past to be remembered as revolutionary concepts in the field of computing.

Goodbye ATi.  Rest in peace.  Your memory will live on.
