Apple Blocks Samsung Galaxy Tab 7.7 From Being Sold

E-mail Print PDF

Apple has not been afraid to start patent wars almost daily, and today is no difference. While many tech experts believe that these lawsuits are frivolous, apparently one has been deemed to carry weight by a German court. According to an article posted on Huffington Post, a German judge has awarded an injunction against Samsung to prevent them from selling their Galaxy Tab 7.7 tablet device. While this injunction is only in effect in Germany, Apple has been trying to get similar injunctions awarded all across the globe, including the United States, South Korea, and Australia.

Apple and Samsung have been in battle for months because Apple believes that Samsung has blatantly copied their technologies. Apple claims that the Galaxy Tab 7.7's design too closely mirrors that of the iPad. In addition, the customized version of the Android OS that is featured on the Galaxy Tab 7.7 almost directly copies the user interface of Apple's iOS, the company claims.

It is surprising that an injunction has been awarded between two high-profile companies, but with the emergence of patent wars across numerous technology companies over the past year, these types of legal rulings are more likely to become common in the future. Patents have proven such a valuable commodity, both in the technology they protect and the ability to avoid drawn out patent wars, that companies have started merging with other companies purely to acquire their patents. Google's acquisition of Motorola for $12 billion is the latest prime example of this emerging pattern.

Apple and Samsung, however, are not friends and won't be merging anytime soon, so it will be interesting to see how the patent wars between these two companies end up.

Steve Jobs Resigns as Apple CEO, Tim Cook to Replace Him

As many people expected over the course of Steve Job's fight with cancer, he has finally thrown in the towel and decided to resign as CEO of Apple.  He has requested to resign his position of Chairman and director as well. Finally, he recommends appointing Tim Cook as new CEO to replace him. Tim Cook is the Apple COO and current interm CEO of Apple Computer.

For those who don't know, Steve Jobs has been back and forth between leadership roles and absent from the company due to his fight against pancreatic cancer since 2004. In 2009, he underwent a liver transplant and appeared to be much better but in early 2011 he was granted a medical leave of absence and has been effectively gone from Apple.

Cheaper iPhone 4 Coming In Early September; Sprint To Get iPhone 5?

E-mail Print PDF

A cheaper version of the iPhone 4 is rumored to be coming to stores in early September, according to a report from InformationWeek.com.  The release of a cheaper 8 GB iPhone 4, priced at a low $99, follows similar moves Apple has done the past several years right before the debut of their next iPhone version.  In the weeks before the launch of the iPhone 4, Apple lowered the price of its 8 GB iPhone 3GS to $99 in a move to reduce supplies of the less powerful smartphone as current users were poised to upgrade.  According to a report released earlier last week, the iPhone 5 is to be released on October 7th, which should give Apple enough time to sell a bunch of its new 8 GB iPhone 4s.

Additional news is swirling about the Apple adding another carrier for its current iPhone 4 and the soon-to-be-released iPhone 5.  The Wall Street Journal is reporting that mobile carrier Sprint will carry the two latest versions of the iPhone, starting with the launch of the iPhone 5 in October.  That would bring the total of United States networks that can support the iPhone up to three, following the original carrier AT&T and Verizon Wireless, who started to carry the iPhone in February 2011.  With T-Mobile set to merge with AT&T, the only carriers continued to be left out of the iPhone bonanza are smaller regional carriers like Alltel, Cricket Wireless, and MetroPCS.

iPad 3 Release Date Pushed Back To Early 2012

Apple's iPad 3 will be released in early 2012, just missing the 2011 holiday shopping season, according to a report this morning in the Wall Street Journal.  The reason - alleged problems with display screens, forcing Apple to switch suppliers on the fly.  It has been rumored for a while that the iPad 3's screen (with a resolution of 2048 X 1536 pixels) would be pushing the current limits for touch screens and difficult to rapidly produce in large numbers, and it seems that this is indeed the case.

Many rumors have been swirling about Apple's products in the past few years, but the Wall Street Journal has a particularly good track record of getting their stories correct.  The WSJ correctly predicted a partnership with mobile carrier Verizon and Apple, and also correctly reported several features of the iPad2 before launch.  Therefore, I would view this latest WSJ report with more validity than others.

While Apple is likely somewhat disappointed that their newest version of the iPad won't be available to consumers for the 2011 holiday shopping season, Apple's brand is so strong that consumers will purchase their products no matter their release date.  Apple proved this when they launched the original version of the iPad in April of all months.

Apple's new iPhone 5 for sale on October 7; New gaming controls?

The rumored introduction of Apple's new iPhone 5 is set for October 7 with information first being released in late September, between September 26-30.  According to sources close to the blog 9to5Mac.com, the new iPhone will likely be unveiled with another, cheaper iPhone.

Some details that are have high confidence:

The iPhone 4 successor will feature an upgraded processor (most likely a dual core variant of the current one) and a higher resolution camera along with the currently-in-beta iOS 5.

The cheaper alternative will be a feature reduced one similar to the current iPhone 4 designed for pre-paid plans like many lower-end Android phones currently are.

Both should feature iOS 5 along with some new goodies including software voice-guided navigation similar to what's present on Android, panorama picture technology, and other features often found on competing phones.

Some new speculation has come out about the apparently enlarged home button leading to the possibility that it either features a hidden button arrangement similar to a depressed joystick or a touch sensor, both to be used for gaming as well as navigation.
